Navigating Workplace Ethics as a Woman
The Complexity of Workplace Ethics
Navigating workplace ethics is rarely straightforward, particularly for women in leadership roles within politics, public affairs, or other politically charged industries. These environments often demand constant prioritization of personal values amidst high-stakes decisions, public scrutiny, and organizational pressures. How do you confidently define and uphold your values when the stakes couldn’t be higher? When do you decide to persevere, and when do you step away?
Real-world examples such as the courageous actions of Danielle Sassoon or Cassidy Hutchinson highlight the immense strength required to defend your ethics against adversity. These women exemplify how clarity in values and steadfastness in boundaries can illuminate a path forward, even when personal and professional risks loom large.
Why Values Are Essential
Values serve as the compass for every decision—guiding you through murky, often unpredictable workplace dynamics. For women in roles susceptible to public scrutiny, such as government positions, aligning decisions with deeply held principles often becomes critical in securing long-term respect and influence. Your values not only define your leadership identity; they set the tone for your professional trajectory.
The Role of Boundaries
While values shape your decisions, boundaries ensure your ability to maintain integrity without compromising personal well-being. I’ve learned through firsthand experience—serving in various public roles such as the California Medical Board—that boundaries are instrumental in identifying when to stay in the fight and when to step aside for the sake of self-preservation.
Stepping away is not a sign of weakness but of profound strength and resolution. When a leadership role becomes unsustainable due to unethical dynamics, toxic workplace culture, or conflicts beyond repair, walking away can sometimes deliver the most powerful statement about your values.
I have seen moments where walking away takes immense courage. A colleague in public office chose not to take their oath due to targeted abuse and threats. Witnessing their decision taught me that self-preservation and integrity go hand in hand.
Cultivating Leadership Resilience
Resilience is forged amidst challenges. For women facing these crossroads, leaning on mentors, colleagues, or trusted supporters can offer clarity and reassurance. Every hard-fought lesson and test of values contributes to shaping leaders who inspire others and pave the way for systemic change.
Your Legacy Starts Here
Ethical leadership is about more than survival—it’s about defining the legacy you wish to leave for future generations. By standing firm in your values even when the path is difficult, you have the power to set higher standards for workplace culture, leadership, and public accountability.
This International Women’s Week, we encourage you to reflect on how your actions align with your long-term goals. Ask yourself, “Does this decision honor my values and the impact I aim to achieve?”
